The military calls it humping, civilians call it rucking, I call it a great way to get in shape. What could be simpler? Strap some weight to your back and go for a hike. That’s what backwoodsmen do anyway. It’s also what backyardsmen should be doing. Besides getting you in shape it will help you get some fresh air and maybe (re)discover that there’s life beyond the keyboard. It’s simple. Just get a decent pack and something to weight it with. Some people will tell you that you need a $200 pack – that is pure BS. You can get a used ALICE pack for less than $60 that is more authentic than any fancy $200 or more “ruck.” Probably a lot stronger too. Start out slow and enjoy yourself. Welcome to Hump Day.
